Numbers tell part of the Head Start story. Since 1965, the program has served more than 37 million children across the United States. Research consistently shows Head Start participants have higher high school graduation rates, better health outcomes, and lower rates of grade retention than comparable children who didn’t attend.
But data doesn’t capture what it actually feels like — the parent who learns their child has a hearing issue they never knew about. The family that gets connected to housing resources in a crisis. The child who couldn’t separate from their parent in August and walks into kindergarten in June like they own the place.
Here is one of those stories, shared with permission by a Yuba City family.
“I Didn’t Think We’d Qualify”
Maria enrolled her daughter Alejandra in E Center’s Head Start program three years ago, when Alejandra was three and a half. At the time, Maria was working part-time, her partner was between jobs, and they were living with extended family while saving for their own place.
“I drove past the E Center building for years and didn’t even know what it was,” she says. “When a friend told me about it, my first thought was, ‘That’s probably not for us.’ I figured there would be some complicated process, or we’d be just over the income limit, or there would be some catch.”
She almost didn’t call.
She did, finally — “just to ask” — and discovered her family qualified easily. Within two weeks, Alejandra was enrolled. The process was simpler than Maria had expected: a conversation with a Family Services staff member, a few documents, and a meeting to learn about the program.
“I remember being surprised at how friendly it was,” she says. “They weren’t looking for reasons to say no. They were looking for ways to say yes.”
What Happened in the First Month
Within Alejandra’s first 45 days at E Center, she had a full health screening — the first comprehensive one she’d ever had. Vision was fine. Hearing was fine. But the medical screening caught something her pediatrician hadn’t flagged: a mild iron deficiency that could affect her energy and cognitive function.
“I didn’t even know that was something to check,” Maria says. “The E Center staff connected us with a pediatrician who helped us address it. Within a few weeks, Alejandra had more energy, was sleeping better, was eating better. It seems small, but it made a real difference.”
This is what a “comprehensive” program actually means. The classroom is part of it — but it’s not all of it.
What the Classroom Did
By the time Alejandra had been at E Center for three months, she was talking in full sentences — long ones, with words Maria had never heard her use before. She was asking “why” about everything. She was counting to 15, identifying most letters, and coming home every day with something to share.
“Before Head Start, she didn’t really play with other kids,” Maria remembers. “She was shy, she’d hide behind me, she’d cry at drop-off for weeks. But the teachers were so patient with her. By October, she was walking in without looking back. By December, she was telling me about her friends.”
The transition to kindergarten, when it came, was seamless. Alejandra’s kindergarten teacher told Maria at the first conference that Alejandra was one of the most prepared children in the class — socially, emotionally, academically.
“Head Start did that,” Maria says simply. “I couldn’t have given her that on my own. Not because I didn’t want to — but because I didn’t know how, and I didn’t have the resources.”
What the Family Services Team Meant
Beyond the classroom, E Center’s Family Services staff made a difference Maria hadn’t anticipated.
“I had a Family Services worker named [name kept private] who was incredible. She helped us find resources we didn’t know existed — food programs, a rental assistance program when we hit a rough patch, even a class I took on financial planning. She checked in on us regularly. She cared about us as a family, not just about Alejandra’s attendance.”
This is the part of Head Start that rarely makes it into the brochures: the family partnership that makes it more than a preschool.
Looking Back
Today, Alejandra is in second grade. She reads above grade level. She has a close group of friends. She’s curious, confident, and enthusiastic about school in a way that Maria credits, in large part, to the foundation laid at E Center.
“I think about what would have happened if I hadn’t called,” Maria says. “If I’d just assumed we didn’t qualify and kept looking for something we could afford — which was nothing. I don’t want to think about that.”
Her advice to other families in Yuba-Sutter who are considering Head Start: Just call. The worst that can happen is that they tell you that you don’t qualify. The best that can happen is what happened to us.
Is Your Family’s Story the Next One?
Every family’s experience is different. But the fundamentals — quality education, health support, nutrition, family partnership — are the same for every child who walks through our doors.

سوالات متداول
Are all Head Start families low-income? Most Head Start families qualify based on income, but not all. Families experiencing homelessness, families receiving certain public assistance, and families with children with disabilities may qualify regardless of income.
What if my child has separation anxiety? This is one of the most common concerns. E Center’s teachers are experienced in supporting gradual separations, and the structured, warm environment of the classroom typically helps children adjust within a few weeks. It’s very common.
Can I visit the classroom? Yes. Parents and guardians are always welcome to observe at E Center, and family visits are encouraged. Many parents do occasional classroom volunteering once they see what the program is like.
E Center is the Head Start and Early Head Start provider for Yuba and Sutter Counties. All programs are free for qualifying families. Names and specific details in parent stories may be modified to protect family privacy.
