You’ve done the research. You’ve decided that Head Start at E Center sounds like the right fit for your child and your family. Now comes the question every parent eventually asks: How do I actually apply?
The good news is that the process is more straightforward than you might expect — and our enrollment team is here to walk with you through every step. This guide lays it all out so you can move forward with confidence.
Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility
Before you gather documents or fill out a form, it helps to know whether your family likely qualifies. Head Start eligibility is based primarily on income and family size.
You may be automatically eligible if: – Your family receives public assistance (TANF, SSI, or similar programs) – Your child is in foster care – Your family is experiencing homelessness
You may qualify based on income if: Your household income falls at or below the federal poverty guidelines for your family size. Many families in Yuba and Sutter Counties are surprised to learn they qualify — the guidelines are broader than most people assume.
The fastest way to find out? Call our enrollment team at (866) 417-4255 or visit https://ecenter.org. A real person will help you assess eligibility in just a few minutes — no pressure, no complicated process.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Once you have a sense of your eligibility, start pulling together the documents you’ll need to complete your application. Having these ready in advance makes the process much smoother.
For your child: – [ ] Birth certificate or other proof of age – [ ] Proof of residency in Yuba or Sutter County (utility bill, lease, or official mail) – [ ] Current immunization records – [ ] Any documentation related to a disability or developmental concern, if applicable
For your household income: – [ ] Recent pay stubs (typically the most recent 2–3) – [ ] If self-employed: most recent tax return or a self-employment statement – [ ] If receiving public assistance: a current benefits letter or award letter from TANF, SSI, or a similar program – [ ] If experiencing homelessness: a letter from a shelter or outreach worker
Don’t worry if you don’t have every document immediately. Our enrollment team can guide you through what you need and help you find alternatives if something is missing.
Step 3: Submit Your Pre-Application
The first official step in the process is completing E Center’s pre-application. This is a brief intake form that helps us understand your family’s needs and connect you with the right program — Head Start for children ages 3–5, or Early Head Start for infants and toddlers ages 0–3.
You can submit a pre-application: – Online at https://ecenter.org – By phone at (866) 417-4255 – وارد شوید در خیابان پلازا ۸۶۰، یوبا سیتی، کالیفرنیا ۹۵۹۹۱
The pre-application is not a commitment — it simply opens the conversation.
Step 4: Meet With Our Enrollment Team
After your pre-application is received, an E Center Family Services staff member will reach out to schedule a meeting. This is an important part of our process — it’s an opportunity for us to get to know your family, answer your questions, and verify your eligibility documentation.
What to expect at this meeting: – A warm, welcoming conversation — this is not an interview or an interrogation – Review of the documents you’ve gathered – A discussion of available program options and schedules – An opportunity to ask anything that’s on your mind
Many families tell us this meeting was much more relaxed than they expected. Our team works with families in our community every day — they’ve heard every question, and they’re here to help, not to judge.
Step 5: Placement and Enrollment Confirmation
Once your eligibility is verified and a spot is available, you’ll receive a formal enrollment offer. At that point, you’ll complete the full enrollment paperwork, get a classroom placement, and receive all the information you need to prepare your child for their first day.
A note on waitlists: E Center serves a high volume of families, and spots fill quickly. If a space isn’t immediately available, we will place your child on our waitlist and contact you as soon as one opens. Applying early — even if your child won’t start for several months — is always a good idea.
What Happens After Enrollment?
Once your child is enrolled, our team doesn’t disappear. At E Center, enrollment is just the beginning of the relationship.
Within the first 45 days of your child’s start date: – Your child will receive comprehensive health and developmental screenings (medical, dental, vision, hearing) – You’ll meet your child’s lead teacher and classroom team – A Family Services staff member will connect with you to discuss goals, resources, and how we can support your whole family
Head Start isn’t just about dropping your child off and picking them up. We’re invested in your family’s success — and that investment starts from day one.
